Summary:

This book is volume II of serious research into the history of Karatedô. It contains translations of texts written by Okinawan and Japanese Karate adepts. For example: Asato Ankô, Itosu Ankô, Funakoshi Gichin and Egami Shigeru.

A second part of the book deals with the influences of Bodhidharma and Shaolin as described by the pioniers Funakoshi Gichin, Miyagi Chōjun and Mabuni Kenwa as well as discussing their opinions. Further, it includes a chapter about or Kon in the Ryūkyū tradition and in Shôtôkan. Next is a study about Shôtôkan-katas, such as Gankaku (Chintô), Hangetsu (Seishan) and Sakugawa no Kon. Another chapter considers the historical development of Kumite in the Karate of Funakoshi.

Finally we find a biography of Shimizu Toshiyuki, an early and highest ranked desciple of  Funakoshi, written by Heiko Bittmann
